Test communication with Engineer on watch using VHF and telephone in the bunker break.

Ensure MSDS sheet is available (posted in bunker break).

Ensure sorbent pads, oil boom, and a CO2 portable fire extinguisher is immediately available in the bunker break.

Ensure tender is properly secured alongside the break and engine(s) are stopped when feasible.  If not possible to stop both diesel engines, then the diesel engine on the side which is being bunkered should be stopped while bunkering.  Some vessels are fitted with cleats forward and aft of the bunker break doors; when safe to do so tenders should tie-up to the cleats to allow stopping of the diesel engines.

Check transfer hose, nozzle, and fittings for any visible defects or damage.

Check for proper functioning of nozzle operation (nozzle pressure automatic shut off device and isolation valve).

Apply pressure and check for hose, nozzle, and fitting leaks before transferring the hose to the tender.

Engineer in Charge to make direct contact with Tender Driver.

Engineer in Charge to discuss emergency stop procedures with Tender Driver and other personnel involved in the transfer.

Engineer in Charge to instructed Tender Driver to monitor tank gauge(s) and notify him when tank is nearly full.

Ensure nozzle is rapped with sorbent pads or similar material to prevent spills when transferring the hose/nozzle between tender and ship.

Ensure hose tension is sufficient to prevent pinching between tender and ship.

Inform Deck Officer and Engineer on watch at start of bunkering.

Fill the tank until the nozzle’s automatic shut-off activates or until the tank gauge just reads full.  Do not overfill.

Close transfer hose isolation valve when finished bunkering and stop transfer pump where applicable.

Drain remaining fuel from transfer hose upon completion of bunkering into the tender’s fuel tank. This may not be feasible if the fuel tank has been completely filled.

Notify Deck Officer and Engineer on watch once bunkering is completed.
